The Writers and Debaters’ Society

About The Writers and Debaters’ Society

The Writers and Debaters’ Society (WDS) is an organization in the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) focused on training its members in the art of public speaking, debating and excellent writing.

Founded in 2016, the young society has by far been the most successful and vibrant campus organization which has continuously produced fierce debaters, prolific writers and illustrious student-leaders whose works and impact transcend the walls of the Institute.

The society made its first appearance in the Ghana University Debaters Championship (GUDC) in 2016, with the then President, Kabu Nartey, emerging as the overall best public speaker of the championship.

In academics, the society avails an opportunity to blend and apply, while expanding and exploring theories being taught in the lecture halls and even new ones to produce the best communicators on and off campus. This is evident in the award wining students the society has produced over the years with the recent over-all best students in both Public Relations and Journalism being effects of the organization, and even more.

It currently boasts as the only on-campus organization that since its inception, has produced student leaders with unassailable integrity and enviable attitude towards service than any other organization on campus with the current SRC President, Edem Vine Dei-Tutu, being a staunch product of the society.

The icing on the cake, is the reigning Miss Communicator 2021, Audrey Akakiya, who sits on her oratory throne with experiences gathered from the society.
